Powder: The Traditional Starting Point
Powder is the most basic and widely available kratom format. It is produced by drying kratom leaves and grinding them into a fine consistency, similar to matcha or other powdered botanicals. According to the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), people in Southeast Asia have traditionally chewed kratom leaves or brewed them into tea, and powder is the closest modern analogue to that traditional leaf material, since it typically undergoes less processing than capsules, extracts, or infused products.
Because powder is minimally processed, its alkaloid content, primarily mitragynine and smaller amounts of 7-hydroxymitragynine, can vary depending on the plant’s growing conditions, harvest timing, and drying method. That natural variability is one reason researchers and regulators have pushed for clearer testing and labeling standards across the kratom market.
Capsules: Convenience Without Taste
Capsules contain the same dried, ground kratom leaf material as powder, sealed inside a gelatin or vegetarian capsule shell. Their main appeal is convenience and the ability to avoid kratom’s notably bitter taste, along with more consistent, pre-measured servings compared with scooping loose powder. Because capsules are simply an encapsulated form of the powder, the accuracy of what is inside them depends on the same manufacturing and testing practices that affect powder products.
The University of Florida research, which analyzed 44 commercially available kratom-derived products including capsules and tablets, found that a majority did not match their labeled contents. Lead researcher Dr. Abhisheak Sharma said “consumers should be able to trust that a product’s label accurately reflects what’s inside,” and called for stronger manufacturing standards, more consistent testing, and clearer labeling industry-wide.
Extracts: Concentrated and More Tightly Regulated
Extracts are produced by processing kratom leaf to concentrate its alkaloids, resulting in a product that is significantly more potent by weight than raw leaf powder. Extracts are sold as resins, tinctures, or powder concentrates and are often labeled with a ratio (such as “10x” or “15x”) intended to indicate how much raw leaf material went into the concentrate, though the accuracy and standardization of these ratios varies by manufacturer.
Extracts, particularly those high in the alkaloid 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), have drawn the most regulatory attention of any kratom format. On July 1, 2026, the Drug Enforcement Administration announced its intent to temporarily place concentrated 7-OH products, along with three related synthetic compounds, into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. DEA Administrator Terrance Cole said the action “targets highly concentrated, synthetic 7-OH products, which pose a growing threat to public safety.” The agency has said the proposed rule would not apply to botanical kratom products containing only naturally occurring, trace-level amounts of 7-OH, meaning traditional leaf, powder, and most capsule products would fall outside the new restriction. Consumers looking at extract products should understand that this is an evolving regulatory area, and that concentration levels can differ substantially from one product to the next.
Gummies: A Newer, Flavored Format
Gummies are among the newest kratom product formats, generally made by infusing a gummy candy base with kratom extract or powder. They are marketed largely on convenience and flavor, masking kratom’s bitterness in a format similar to other supplement gummies. Because gummies rely on infusion with extract or powder, their accuracy depends on precise dosing during manufacturing, an area the University of Florida study specifically flagged as inconsistent across the broader kratom market, which included gummies among the product types tested.
As with extracts, the concentration of active alkaloids in a gummy can vary by manufacturer and batch, which is part of why researchers have called for more standardized testing across all modern kratom formats rather than leaf-based products alone.
Tea: The Format Closest to Traditional Use
Kratom tea is typically made by steeping either dried leaf or powder in hot water, sometimes with an acidic ingredient like lemon juice to help extract alkaloids, and can be purchased as ready-made bags, loose blends, or bottled beverages. Of all modern formats, tea is the one most directly connected to the traditional preparation NCCIH describes from Southeast Asia, where kratom leaves have historically been brewed rather than concentrated or processed into capsules and extracts.
Even so, commercially sold kratom tea products are still subject to the same labeling and consistency questions raised by recent research, since the amount of kratom material, and therefore alkaloid content, used in a given tea product is not always disclosed in a standardized way.
Why the Format Distinctions Matter
The Food and Drug Administration has stated that kratom is “not lawfully marketed in the U.S. as a drug product, a dietary supplement, or a food additive in conventional food,” and no kratom product, in any format, currently has FDA approval. The agency has said its concerns apply broadly across leaf, powder, and extract preparations, and it has specifically flagged concentrated 7-OH products as a higher priority given their potency relative to natural leaf material.
Taken together, the recent research and regulatory activity point to the same conclusion: format matters less than accuracy and transparency. Whether a product is sold as powder, capsules, extract, gummies, or tea, the University of Florida findings suggest that label claims cannot always be taken at face value. Industry groups and researchers have called for more consistent third-party testing and clearer labeling requirements so consumers can better understand what they are buying regardless of which format they choose. Until those standards are more uniformly adopted and enforced, understanding how each format is made, and how it differs from raw leaf, remains one of the more practical tools consumers have for making informed decisions.
